Exactal BIM Show Live Wrap-Up

Last week Exactal attended and exhibited at BIM Show Live in the UK. Our third year exhibiting, it was our most successful yet, and helped further cement CostX®’s reputation in the UK as one of the top 5D BIM solutions.

The show took place in Manchester over the 23rd and the 24th of April. During the two days, Exactal manned Stand 29 in the Tech Hall exhibition area. We had plenty of visitors to our stand during the breaks in the show; not just QS or construction companies interested in how to use 5D BIM, but also architectural companies interested in how they can provide the best models to those using CostX®.

Further to this, three presentations during the show featured CostX® clients showcasing their 5D BIM capabilities. On Wednesday 23rd, Dave Monswhite & George Mokhtar from Turner & Townsend, who use CostX® in multiple international offices, presented Money & Mega-Projects: 5D Know-How & Processes Laid Bare. The presentation covered how to work with BIM estimating on mega-projects, specifically costing up Project OVE by Arup. Dave Monswhite noted “We used CostX on this project”; with many screenshots of CostX shown during the presentation, and the BIM revisioning function of CostX covered in detail. The presentation was very well received by attendees, with @MichaelMurphy10 on Twitter stating: Superb presentation money and mega projects #BSL2014 excellent delivery from George and Dave.

Then, on the morning of Thursday 24th, Trevor Woods from DPW Group presented The Good, the Bad & the Ugly: BIM from a QS Perspective. This presentation focused on how important it is for architects and the QS/estimator to effectively communicate with each other to create better buildings overall. During the presentation, Trevor told the audience “CostX is my QS Swiss Army Knife”, and went on to explain how it’s the tool of choice when working with today’s hybrid workflow of BIM & 2D. Attendees were impressed by the power of 5D BIM, with @leeroyb on Twitter noting: Most important stat I’ve seen this week, £67k per day vs £1.7million worth of estimates in a day, traditional 2d takeoff vs BIM! #bsl2014

Finally, on Thursday afternoon, it was the turn of Andrew Turner & Paul Curran from Henry Riley, an SME using CostX® for 5D BIM. Their topic was Attempting to Comply Level 2 BIM, as an SME QS working on small-value projects. This presentation talked about the challenges that a QS can face with BIM, specifically for SMEs, but also the advantages that can come of it. Andrew also noted that they are dedicated CostX® clients, stating “We use CostX. It’s very good”, and that it is an important reason for their SME BIM success. Some great points of interest were raised, and @noscalerule on Twitter stated: Good advice from @ATurnerHRLLP – start your BIM journey with a small project #BSL2014

With these three important presentations showcasing the use of CostX® as a tool of choice for 5D BIM estimating as well as our own presence at the show, there is no doubt that CostX® is making a mark upon many in the UK BIM world. Simon Lovegrove, Regional Manager for UK & Europe, who attended the show along with other Exactal staff, stated “BIM Show Live 2014 has been a great success for us. Due to the fact that CostX featured in three key presentations during the show, we not only received many expressions of interest at our stand, but our name has been put firmly at the forefront of BIM estimating in the UK, and indeed worldwide”.
